Whenever my students ask me whether they should buy the Littmann Cardiology III Stethoscope I like to tell them a story from my childhood. My grandfather was a butcher so, at home, he would have a separate drawer with his own knives that nobody else was allowed to touch. Being a child, of course, that only meant that those were the only knives I used to want to use and I was forever frustrated because I was not allowed. So whenever I had the chance, like if my grandparents were away, I would take the biggest knife in my grandfather’s collection and I would cut potatoes to make French fries – that was the only think I knew how to cook. The interesting thing was that, to this day, I don’t remember my grandfather’s knives being particularly sharp.

Years past, I grew up and gave up my obsession. Then, when I bought my first apartment, my grandfather gave me one of his prized knives as a house warming gift. I think I remember other people there giving me presents, but I was so elated to receive that knife that I forget everything else. So, I decided to cook something just to get to use that knife and I started by chopping some potatoes. The knife went through them so fast and easily that it actually did not feel like I was handling a knife but rather a laser. Then I decided to through some chicken wings on top of the potatoes and I started cutting them in to pieces. That was actually the moment when I realized I was not handling a knife but the biggest, sharpest scalpel I have ever had the chance to hold in my hands.

By this point half of my students usually realize what I mean by my story, but I have to spell it out for the rest anyway: if you have never handled a stethoscope the Littmann Cardiology III will feel just like any other stethoscope. If you have a pocket full of money, go ahead and buy it but do not expect it to give you an edge over your colleagues that chose to buy a different, cheaper stethoscope. You need to grow as a physician to be able to appreciate the Littmann Cardiology Stethoscope.

It uses 2 cardiology level diaphragms that are so sensitive and accurate that you may not grow to appreciate even after years of practice. The Littmann Cardiology III Stethoscope uses 2 diaphragms because it was designed with a double sided chest piece. One side if for adults and the other is for children or for smaller patients or narrower parts of the body. The design of the chest piece was designed in such a way that, if you apply a small pressure on the chest piece the sides of the bell spread and you can pick up low frequency sounds. Alternatively, you can release the pressure and just gently press the stethoscope on the patient to hear high frequency sounds. Often enough I will add the bell sleeve, that comes with the stethoscope, on top of the pediatric side of the chest piece, and that will allow me to really hear even the slightest low frequency murmur or sound.

The only reason why the Littmann stethoscope might be a good choice for my students is the fact that it uses a two in one tube design, with a double lumen, in order to prevent false sounds coming from the friction of 2 tubes together. A doctor with years of experience behind him would actually be able to tell the difference between normal sounds of the body and the sounds of the tubes, but a student will definitely have a hard time doing it. However, the double lumen technology is something Littmann have introduced into most of their other stethoscopes so, if you are a student or a young doctor trying to pay off his debts, make sure to check out our list of the best stethoscopes, and choose wisely.

The other reason why the Cardiology III stethoscope might be a good choice even if you do not have that much experience is because of the anatomically designed headset. If you do not have that much experience with stethoscopes, it is very likely that you are going to spend a lot of time using one and the shape of the headset will make it more comfortable in the long run. Still, the shape of the headset is not the only thing impressive about it: Littmann have a patented Soft Sealing Eartip technology that they are very proud of. What it does is it shuts out the noise of the outside world so you can focus only on the auscultation. There are other stethoscopes that do a pretty good job of isolating you from the noise outside, but they cannot match the Littmann. In fact, because students are usually practicing in very noisy environments, sometimes made noisy by their own pears, the Soft Sealing Eartips are one of the best reasons to buy a Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope. However there are other Littmann stethoscopes with the same technology so you may want to choose one of those simply because they may be more affordable.

The point of this entire rant is that you should buy a stethoscope that you can get the most out of. There is no reason to buy a car that can do 130 miles per hour if you are just going to drive it to the grocery store and back. However, if are a practicing doctor and the life of your patients depends on the smallest details you can pick up with your stethoscope, then you owe it to yourself and to your patients to get the Littmann Cardiology III Stethoscope.
